No self-drive permits are necessary any longer. From 2019 the circular 4×4 self-drive route has been shortened, and can be driven at no extra charge, but please deflate your tyres to prevent getting stuck in the sand! No driving off the demarcated route is permitted.
For those who would like a longer or different drive, please make use of our Dune drive with driver (Hideout vehicle) 2 or 4 hours into varied terrain.
Our vehicle is a modified and comfy 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser, which seats 7 comfortably, 10 at a squeeze.
A Dune Drive is a scenic drive over the dunes (vegetated with mainly camelthorn trees and various grass species).
Game to be seen is mostly gemsbok (oryx antelope) and springbok with some ostrich throughout, although occasionally one sights bat-eared foxes, zebra, giraffe, cheetah, leopard and other mammals, as well as plenty of ground and airborne birds, desert insects and geckos/lizards.
Limited unguided (unmarked) walking in the dunes – please ask our staff for directions
Visits can be arranged to the NaDEET centre (Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust) – only 5 kilometres away, this is a very worthwhile cause and interesting to visit
Hot-air ballooning by prior arrangement
Relaxing – doing nothing!
